Cemetery Fog

The Story

Hello

I took this photo on a Sony Digital 5megapixel camera in July 2009. I was
at the cemetary for a little bit of fun to freak out a friend who was
extreamly scared. This picture was taken above a grave dated 1899. So many
people have viewed it with sceptsism which i believe can only help. the
more questions the better i say. The only light source was from the flash
on the camera, and no-one was smoking, and there was no fog. (they are the
most common questions i receive).

Thank you

Kirsten
(Ps: I took it off my myspace profile because i do not have the memory
stick anymore)

Analysis

If I am to take everything that Kirsten says at face value, I will assume that there is no fog and no one is smoking.  Judging by the scene, however, it looks like there is a frost or a light snow covering the ground.  If that's not snow or frost, it's still pretty obvious that the ground is wet and that humidity is quite high.

This means that conditions are right for breath to become visible which can happen whether it is cold or only cool.  The breath, which could have been invisible to the naked eye, would have lit up like a Christmas tree under a flash giving the illusion of a ghostly mist which is what 99.9 percent of all ghostly mist pictures turn out to be.

Conclusion

Foggy breath illuminated by the flash.
