The Cornwall Figure
The Story
Hi Jason,
attached to the mail I am sending you a photo which might be a good addition to
the Ghost Gallery.
I recently came across some old photos that I took during a month's travel
across the South West of England (I am from Germany originally) in 2004. While I
started putting those pictures in the right order, I suddenly stumbled across
one that I didn't have a closer look at before (I took about 400 photos...). I
remembered that I had taken it on a trip to Chysauster Ancient Village, a Celtic
settlement in Cornwall (close to Land's End), as I also like to take pictures of
ruined houses and I liked that one already growing a tree inside the ruins. Now
I was very surprised to find a strange figure on the left of the building. I am
not sure whether it is just a stone formation of the wall, but it looks a lot
like a person in a robe (you can even make out hair on its head). While I was
walking there, there was not a single person around - I was there in October
when the visitor numbers are low already, and I was the only visitor in the
area. I did not tamper with the photo material, they were developed in a local
supermarket 6 years ago...
Please tell me what you think about it!
See you,
Chiara

Analysis

At first glace, the Cornwall Figure does appear to be a dark man with his head bowed -- certainly the image that would would expect to find at a ruined structure like this if a ghost were to show up.
However, adjusting the contrast of the image reveals the specter's true form: little more than a crumbling continuation of the wall; Possibly an old retaining wall. This is confirmed by the mortar breaks at the grass line and the similar light reflection of the figure and the wall.
Conclusion
Not a ghost.
